ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the author shares some of her favourite ideas to engage children outside; some even include no prep time and no resources, so there really can be no excuse for not giving them a try. Water in puddles is great because there is a world of possibilities depending on the child’s ideas. Some children jump straight in whilst others prefer to sit and watch as the water moves or ripples when hit by dropped stones. Puddle patterns are just that – patterns that can be seen in puddles. It is exactly what is says on the tin, but taking the time to notice them is where the magic happens. Collecting things is a favourite pastime of many children and can be seen in a number of schema. There is something about large-scale painting that brings an element of freedom children simply can’t experience with tabletop creations.
