ABSTRACT
In the UK, it is largely acknowledged that a pre-school-age child is any child between the ages of 3 years old and starting primary school, which is the term after they turn 4 in most circumstances, although it is worth noting that compulsory school age here in the UK is the term after a child’s fifth birthday. This chapter looks specifically at 3- to 5-year-olds in terms of how creativity manifests itself at this age and the routines and rhythms of the day in early years settings that can ensure children are given the skills and allowed the time they need to develop creative thinking whilst ensuring that they are being challenged to think at a level appropriate to them. Before practitioners delve into the elements that support development of creativity in pre-school children, it is important to consider the developing brain and the changes that occur around the age of 3.
