ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses Liang’s translation of George Orwell’s political satire Animal Farm and deciphers the intricate relationship among Liang’s ideology, the dominant ideology, and his use of the pseudonym “Li Qichun”. Liang’s translation of Animal Farm is a reflection of the complicated conflicts between his personal ideology and the dominant ideology within a special historical period. This case demonstrates that a translator may be constrained by the dominant ideology and yet can also exert their ideological influence and that translation can be manipulated not only by the patron but also by the translator.
