ABSTRACT
This chapter investigates how the translated works were used in the debates between Liang Shiqiu and Lu Xun through the analysis of the Chinese versions of Rousseau’s Emile, several proletarian works, Paul Elmer More’s Property and Law and Vyacheslav Polonsky’s “Lenin’s Views of Art and Culture”. The debates between Liang and Lu involved not only the issues related to translation standards but also the translated works per se and had far-reaching repercussions in modern Chinese intellectual history. While Chapter 4 touches on the debates between Liang Shiqiu and Lu Xun in terms of translation poetics, this chapter mainly involves the contention between them in terms of ideology. During the debates, the translated works were also used as ammunition to facilitate the elaboration of the debaters’ views.
