ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the translation poetics of another important Babbittian named Wu Mi 吳宓 and its differences from Liang’s translation poetics. Also one of Irving Babbitt’s students at Harvard University, Wu made great efforts to promote Babbitt’s New Humanism in China through his writings and translations. But Liang and Wu had great differences in their views on the use of vernacular Chinese and modern punctuation as advocated by Hu Shi during the New Culture Movement. Following an analysis of Wu Mi’s translation poetics as reflected in his discourse on translation and Irving Babbitt’s influence on him, this chapter further explores the two translators’ different habitus and the reasons leading to the differences between them.
