ABSTRACT

Teachers may find themselves needing to justify playing and analyzing historical games in history class. This chapter surveys several talking points to help explain the effective use of games in history education. History education is about getting students to learn and practice rigorous skills of analysis and critique In this context, historical games, when criticized, become an important pedagogy. They are a widely popular medium, instances of public history, and excellent for considering human agents operating within a historical context. Nor does studying them require less focus on critical skills like writing.
