ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the various ways historical games can be incorporated into history class learning environments. Introducing historical video games and supporting purposeful play and analysis of these games is a four-step process. Considerations are made for the wide variety of ways that educators may draw upon historical video games in their history classes, ranging from the use of video clips, engagement of individuals who play games, and play of multiple games on multiple platforms, to lessons where the whole class learns to play the same game on the same types of machines. There is also a discussion of approaching sensitive topics in historical video games.
