ABSTRACT

Organizational success depends on people. Research has proven what we intuitively know to be true: when employees are engaged in their work they perform better, and when they perform better, the organization benefits. But what is employee engagement? How is it created? How is it different from other constructs such as satisfaction and commitment? How is it changing in the face of technological and societal changes that are transforming the nature of work? Managers need answers to all of these questions as they are fundamental to managing effectively in a fast-changing and unpredictable world. Workforce engagement can be a vital competitive advantage but also a moral imperative for organizations in the 21st century.
