ABSTRACT

The digital revolution is widely regarded as equally or more important than the industrial revolution that was powered by the steam engine and electricity. It is bringing about an era that has the unique characteristics of being “exponential” and increasingly “digital.”

How these trends influence attitudes toward work and organizations will no doubt shape our thinking on how work will be configured and what concepts like engagement and loyalty mean in this new context. Managers need to navigate these new realities even when they are not fully understood. For example, will artificial intelligence (AI)–driven automation render most jobs obsolete, or are the technologies ushering in a new age where humans will be empowered by them – augmented by AI capabilities rather than being displaced by them? In this chapter, I explore the emerging new ways of working based on digital technology, big data, and connectivity.
