ABSTRACT
La Pharisienne, very sensitively translated by Gerard Hopkins, is the first volume in an English edition now being prepared of Francois Mauriac’s work. Of its author I know only that he is a Catholic and has a high place among contemporary French writers; and, as I have read nothing of his except this book, anything I say about it must suffer from the fact that I cannot relate it to his other work.
