ABSTRACT

Emotions are the thoughts and feelings that we have as individuals. We may describe them as feelings or mental states, and then define them in more detail with words such as sad, angry, upset, frustrated, happy, content and excited. When an infant is born, we may notice that they show interest (turn towards a sound, for example) or hunger (crying for milk and being settled on the breast or bottle), and from two to four months they may smile spontaneously. Around this time they may also demonstrate surprise or discomfort (I want my nappy changed) as well as laughter. Babies demonstrate these emotions through their facial expressions, the sounds they make and their body movements.
