ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how to do effective networking, a key skill within the publishing industry. The starting point is offering an explanation as to why it matters. Having accepted that it is important, the chapter offers practical strategies for both networking online, with specific guidelines for different forms of social media, and networking in-person. Consistent principles are that networking needs to be a two-way process and need not imply insincerity. There are significant questions: what do you want people to remember about you, and how can that best be achieved, as well as practical suggestions for remembering names and background details.
