ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to the publishing industry and poses a series of challenges that the industry faces about which an interviewee for a position within the industry will be expected to have an opinion, and offers some consideration of each as food for thought. The issues include how to improve diversity and inclusion within publishing; the impact of the pandemic; whether we still need publishers; whether print is dead; whether the consolidation of publishers will continue and where it will end; the future of independent publishing; the role of profit; how involved authors should be in marketing their books; and whether the textbook sector and bricks and mortar bookshops are doomed.
