ABSTRACT

This chapter offers wider thinking about the skill set you build up while learning to become an effective publisher. To begin with, there is an exploration of the differences between the skill sets and aptitudes needed in publishing and journalism, so that readers can think about where they are best suited to apply their talents. The wider usefulness of the associated skill sets are many, from options within marketing; research and statistics; politics and government; museums and galleries; corporate communications and PR; literacy promotion; bibliotherapy; the wider charitable sector; and initiatives to widen participation and promote diversity within other economic and social sectors. The publishing skill set, and the mindset acquired in the process, emerge as both highly transferable and of enduring value.
