ABSTRACT

This chapter is designed to get students thinking both with and beyond the university as a context, with public events and rituals that are familiar fixtures of both the university and farther afield. Anyone can go to a wedding, but this chapter helps students to think of them anthropologically. And, of course, the university holds dear its own rituals – like graduation. This chapter helps students get a firmer anthropological grip on the ordinary world – seen anew, with their emergent uncommon sense.
