ABSTRACT

An understanding of the traditional Law of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples is not only important in itself but as a foundation for explorations of the interactions between Aboriginal people and British-derived criminal law. This chapter introduces the diversity and longevity of Australia's original inhabitants and the role of Law in their societies, as well as the importance of story in preserving and communicating that Law. It shows that this Law has persisted despite long being denied and disregarded by settler colonists.
