ABSTRACT
Crime is defined as an act or omission which constitutes an offence under the law. A history of crime requires a basic understanding of the operation of relevant laws, law enforcement, prosecution and punishment. This chapter treats how English law was introduced to the Australian colonies and the judicial processes which operated in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, following the offender's path from accusation, through arrest, charging, trial, sentencing and punishment.
