ABSTRACT

The Elgin marbles have not been preserved to people intact, and they now stand quite apart from their initial and intended contexts. The basic requirement that anything designed to be the object of engrossed attention must be a whole of parts, or aspects that are mutually relevant for contemplation is justified by a fact about attention. Harmony in hues is thus seen to involve not mere hues mentioned without reference to their being deployed in space. The yellows and greens, for the converse reason, are used in smaller areas ; and the whites appear only over small areas. The purple would stand out least; the blue would stand out more than the purple, but less than the green; and the green, and the saffron, and the orange would stand out most, in the order in which they are named.
