ABSTRACT

Chapter six examines the expanding global scope of intelligence relative to information gathering surrounding Spanish preparations for the failed Armada invasion, the foundation of English colonies in the New World, privateering, and international trade in Europe and the Ottoman Empire. In the aftermath of the defeat of the Armada, the chapter looks at the shift in focus of the intelligence network from Catholics to Protestant nonconformists, specifically examining the Martin Marprelate Controversy and the employment of government agents and propagandists in stopping the spread of radical Protestantism.
