ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the core of my argument, which revolves around the question of whether thereare any other explanations (besides its colonial and military histories) for Nigeria’s militarised Fourth Republic? What are they (if any)? In this chapter, I spotlight the internal processes and incongruities in Nigeria’s democratic system of the Fourth Republic. The chapter looks at how these structures (political, social, economic and cultural), rather than their colonial and military histories, provide a better or fuller frame of reference for explaining its militarised democracy.
