ABSTRACT

The document in question was ‘Social Indices in Stevenage’, which was the publication of the results of a social survey carried out in 1971. The report was merely an embarrassment to a Board which was forever patting itself on the back, informing the public at regular intervals that three town planners from Honolulu had been to see the ‘miracle’, that last year they ‘had more official visitors than ever before’, and that there was a society in Stevenage to cater for every need, like the ‘Starline Majorettes’, the ‘Stevenage Sword Dancers’, and the ‘Lancaster Bomber International Research Group’. The principal function of the volume was to discuss comments on the general planning of Stevenage arising from the updating exhibition, and public meetings of October and November 1971. November saw the official announcement by the Stevenage Councillors – with the exception of the three Conservative Councillors – that they were opposed to the proposed expansion.
