ABSTRACT

Interview Shows. This chapter discusses how interview programs are scripted in media settings. The chapter begins with an investigation of the four categories of interview questions (closed-ended, open-ended, hypothetical, and outside-the-box) and evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of each type. Numerous examples of these questions are also provided, as well as a discussion of how to effectively mix the different types of questions. The chapter then provides a sample template for a TV interview show, followed by sections on warming up interviewees, timing, active listening, follow-up questioning, and asking tough questions. The chapter concludes with the three-step process that is used to wrap up an interview.
