ABSTRACT

Episodic Television. This chapter discusses scripting for episodic television programs in the half-hour comedic and one-hour narrative forms. Along with a look at the difference between episodic and serialized programming, the chapter divides the programs into half hour sitcoms, one-hour dramas, and daytime soap operas. The universal introductory pages are shown, followed by in-depth examinations of the nuances of the different program types. Acts and scenes, scene headings, action lines, characters, dialogue, and parentheticals are delineated as they are slightly varied within each type of show. The chapter concludes with sections concerning plots and subplots, beats, arcs, and rewrites.
