ABSTRACT

Newspaper and Magazine. This chapter reviews the writing styles used within printed periodicals, categorized as newspapers and magazines. Basic concepts of copy, font, and column inches are introduced, as are the limits of story length due to advertisements and the news hole. The elements of writing in a particular style are addressed with an eye to crafting compelling leads, writing in the active voice, using delayed attribution, writing with the correct descriptors, and checking phrasing for neutrality. Additional elements, like headlines, photos (or cuts), and cutlines, are also described in detail. The chapter concludes with a discussion of advancing stories and the fundamental differences between newspaper and magazine writing.
