ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how additional ‘spot’ arrays can be used to supplement the dominant-array setups discussed in the previous chapter, and two in-depth case-studies are provided to help consolidate practical understanding of all the factors involved. For each spot array, it's important to manage its spill pickup (in which context the concepts of Focus and Backdrop help clarify discussion) and consider its impact on the stereo image, tone, and depth of all instruments in the ensemble. There is also a dedicated engineer's quickstart guide to recording drum kits, as well as advice on EQ/delay adjustments for spot microphones, the usefulness of the 3:1 rule, array-naming conventions amongst audio engineers, and approaches to monitoring and sightlines for ensembles.
