ABSTRACT

Smartphones are transforming digital communication into a new innovative “mobile-first” traffic system. Mobile stories, hashtags, tags, emojis and direct messages are among the new signposts directing traffic in the digital universe. This chapter looks at the new story genres that are emerging on smartphones and in social media. It shows how they work and which AI-based storytelling tools are integrated into popular platforms. The first film cameras recorded only a few seconds at a time at the end of the 19th century. Filmmakers had to think carefully about what they wanted to record. In the dynamic social media ecosystem, new mobile story formats and genres are constantly developing based on technical specifications and the possibilities of platforms and smartphones. In 2007, Chris Messina was interested in finding an agile way to organise groups on the new Twitter platform.
