ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses various forms of violence against women. Violence has been used as one of the most important mechanisms to establish male dominance and maintain the status quo of the socio-cultural structure in the Indian society. Women in India are exposed to several forms of violence such as rape, sexual harassment, acid attack and cyber-crime-led violence. Most forms of violence against women have socio-cultural acceptance to the extent that even a few forms of violence are often perceived as inherent or integral part of the normal life of a woman. Many feminists have been raising issues related to violence against gender and have been trying to influence the state to bring laws against violence. The chapter also highlights failure of the law and discusses various challenges that obstruct the adequate implementation of law and rehabilitation policy.
