ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses women and work, and argues the politics of the definition of the work whereby a large section of the work done by the woman is often remained unrecognised, invisible or unpaid. For instance, women’s productive labour in the household, reproductive labour and care work at home remain invisible and are not considered work. The chapter highlights how a lot of work done by women in their own agricultural land and home-based enterprise and their contribution to work generally remain invisible. The chapter highlights on women’s work force in the unorganised sector (around 90 per cent) and several insecurities and vulnerabilities faced by these unorganised workers within the informal sector. The chapter also highlights on women’s participation in the organised and service sector. Most importantly the chapter explores various challenges and possibilities of opportunity related to women engaged in various works. The chapter further analyses the issue of feminisation of labour in the context of globalisation and the contemporary feminist debates on women and work.
