ABSTRACT

This chapter argues sex work is one of the oldest forms of the work. There are estimated 8,00,000 sex workers in India and their economic contribution is profound to the extent that the ILO calls it a commercial sex sector. Yet the economic contribution remains invisible and is never counted in the GDP of the Indian economy. Sex workers face several stigma and discrimination in the Indian society. The chapter discusses feminists’ debates around sex work and issues of trafficking and legalisation of sex work in India.
