ABSTRACT

Following these examples, we gain insight by examining the metaphors of education in their ancient origins and relatively recent spread and development, indicating that they have been called into being for a strong reason. This insight cannot be gained by any means other than scrutinizing the respective metaphors and proposing the realities that have caused them to come about. Without the awareness gained from an appreciation of these animating metaphors, the most meaningful dimensions of the learning experience remain hidden, and education is consigned to mechanistic blindness.
