ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of pseudoscience in cultural anthropology. This is presented using the case study of the Tasaday of the Philippines. The Tasaday were presented as a “stone age” tribe untouched by the modern world. Many academic and public figures were involved in their popularization. This turned out to be largely a hoax, with the Tasaday largely an invention. The controversy surrounding this is discussed, as well as an analysis of why so many people fell for this particular hoax.
