ABSTRACT
This chapter presents several examples were linguistic arguments have been used to support political or nationalistic ideology. In each case the linguistic facts are misrepresented or falsely interpreted to an extreme degree. Case studies include the idea that specific modern languages are root languages for all other languages, or that there is linguistic evidence for pre-Columbian contact between Africa and the Americas. This misuse of linguistic data for political ends is termed “pseudolinguistics”.
