ABSTRACT
This chapter presents a famous example of pseudoscience in physical anthropology. The hypothesis that human evolution involved an aquatic stage is a long-standing belief despite it having been thoroughly debunked. This hypothesis is presented in detail, along with its debunking, and used to illustrate a range of cognitive biases and fallacies. The idea persists, even to the point of contributing to a modern belief in mermaids.
