ABSTRACT

Apart from Brave New World, the most well-known and widely discussed novel by Huxley is Point Counter Point – a novel which is directed at exposing the rot that has set in in the upper and middle classes. The “philosophy of meaninglessness” has entered the core of society, and that is why this chapter begins with a detailed discussion of this philosophy and what it entails. This novel, moreover, is to a great extent, autobiographical, and many of the characters are based on real people, the author himself represented by one of the major characters of the novel, Philip Quarles. Mark Rampion, similarly, is based on D.H. Lawrence. The entire chapter discusses the major characters of the novel, and how they are related to the hollow rot that has overtaken the society of the time. In discussing the characters, the satirical purpose of the writer is also analyzed.
