ABSTRACT
The focus of this chapter is on singular versus pluralistic prescriptions for moral actions. James understood the urgency and practical consequences of common moral questions: Should there be a requirement that all people be vaccinated? Should all abortions be outlawed? Should there be one and only one morally acceptable birth control method? Should people have the right to physician-assisted death with dignity? James argued that there is no single value scheme applicable to all situations. There may be moral requirements to observe practical guidelines and limits such as tax laws and traffic rules, but even these must suffer adjustments from time to time and in specific or unusual situations.
