ABSTRACT

This chapter takes us to the battle finale, the Kohima-Imphal battles. The arrival of the Japanese-INA troops and their infiltration to different parts of Manipur and Naga Hills are discussed, including the response of the local people, caught in the moral dilemma of having to choose between two formidable forces. For some communities there were no choices at all, as they had to give all they could for a war they were abruptly entrapped in. This chapter also tells us about what happened at Jessami and Kharasom, two isolated and remote villages, and the initial stages of the Tennis court battle in Kohima. These stories are told from the personal recollections of a soldier from the Assam Regiment, as he understood and as he experienced it. It also includes his journey in the recapture of Burma, a telling tribute to the contribution of the Assam Regiment and the indigenous youth to the allied war.
