ABSTRACT

The ableist framework in which society depends on is critically examined within this chapter before more closely focusing on how gender and sport interact within this environment. Overlapping identities linked to dis/ability and gender are discussed in relation to double and triple discrimination and the impact this has for navigating sporting opportunities and experiences. Masculinities and femininities are continually managed and shaped in conjunction with sports participation and competition. The Paralympic Games are described and detailed in relation to their origins, expectations and representation. Furthermore, the media coverage of the Paralympics and para-athletes is critically examined in connection with gender, visibility and discourse.
