ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the complexities that arise when the gendered world of parenting coincides with the gendered environment of sport. ‘Good’ and gender appropriate parenting is introduced and the associated social discourse that circulates this discussion is explored. Sport can be both a discriminatory space and one of inclusion for diverse families which highlights the complexities and contradictions involved in the relationship. The chapter specifically discusses fatherhood and motherhood in relation to sport and youth sport involvement. Furthermore, the challenges involved in pregnancy and motherhood for elite athletes is explored by addressing the complex issues of pressure, bodies and logistics. Sports business is also investigated in this chapter with particularly focus on sponsors, policies and fandom. This chapter concludes by calling for more research to be undertaken to investigate the gendered experiences and lives of parents, families through sport.
