ABSTRACT
The internet, globalisation, advanced technology, social media, 24/7 news or simply the fact that there are now over 7.7 billion of us all living in close proximity to each other, means that we are now waking up to a new reality. Arguably the most important social change to occur is not globalisation but massification – the massification of further and higher education. Traditionally, power in Western universities has been held by white males, with all leaders of whatever race or gender required to operate within a masculinist, performative culture. This continues to be the case and is one important aspect of university life which must therefore change if these organisations are to embrace the demands for inclusivity fast emerging around the world.
