ABSTRACT
By “inscriptions “I mean the piece of poetry or prose woven into the design of a Chinese painting; we can hardly say it is “written on it” for it is a part as vital to the whole as the boat to the lonely fisherman. It is, however, a factor quite strange to Western art, and needs a little illuminating.
