ABSTRACT

In the foregoing chapters I have tried to discover for you some general ideas inherent in our painting; now we must turn to the media and instruments. The evolution of our art is more intimately related with the nature of these instruments that we use, than in most other countries: even in modern times we choose subjects with an eye to the possibilities of our media, loving to paint the pine, bamboo and willow, not because they are the only trees in China, or even for their symbolism entirely, though that is a point for consideration, but because their outline and components are ideally suited to our brush and ink.
