ABSTRACT

The best way to manage the explosive nature of gifted children is to deal with the crisis before there is one. People are the same way, giving many warning signs of the impending crisis. It is the realization that there are warning signs that need to be heeded in order to prevent the explosion. Learning the warning signs help the parent and the child understand their escalation cycles and can be the key to preventing the explosion all together. However, when the explosion is dealt with poorly by the parents, the result usually is a larger explosion down the road. The key to successful management of the explosion lies in the parents ability to disengage from the crisis. Disengaging from the crisis starts with an understanding of what the parents triggers are. Once debriefing occurs, it is time to deal with the rules that were broken before or after the explosion.
