ABSTRACT

Educators, mental health professionals, friends, and family all can serve a role in helping both the parent and child navigate their way through this difficult time. After concerns and goals have been addressed, it is important for the team to discuss previously attempted interventions and the results. A solid understanding of giftedness and a close working relationship with the individuals educating your child can help when things get rocky. Alternative education programs usually have strong parent groups, as well as resources for parents. It can be very difficult for some parents to enlist the help of mental health professionals. Once that list is reconciled with insurance and financial considerations, it is important to interview each mental health professional being considered. Overall, mental health professionals can provide significant support to the parent and child.
