ABSTRACT

Problems involving perfectionism, school achievement, resiliency and risk-taking, and school avoidance are born out of the emotional characteristics inherent in these children. Using the coaching strategies and interventions presented throughout this book, parent-child dialogues have the potential to positively impact your gifted child's ability to problem solve and regulate their behavior. Although that high performance standard gifted children embody is a good quality, it can lead to a perfectionism that becomes paralyzing. However, Vincent's reasons for not turning in the work are very different as is the dialogue between Vincent and his father. In fact, this dialogue prohibits the child from even owning his behavioral choices. However, by posing it in a yes/no format it almost guarantees a "no" and prevents any additional dialogue on the subject. Developing Resiliency, provides some suggestions for parents to teach their children how to develop resiliency and build a growth mindset.
