ABSTRACT

Just as it is important to have clear expectations, it is equally important to have consequences for behavior both good and bad. When those are too distant or unavailable, it is important to have consequences in place and be able to discuss them with your children. Positive consequences mean the child can earn things, or not earn things (like screentime), based on compliance to the expectations of the household. More than just a forum for parents to instruct children on various expectations, consequences, and the like, a family meeting can be a great chance for the child to speak out and share their thoughts regarding the various rules or activities of the household. It can provide the forum needed to create and maintain a well-run household that promotes healthy emotional development. Working as partners with the schools, parents can help teachers bridge the distance that can occur between the educational system and our gifted youths, especially those who underachieve.
