ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines multiple experiential sociometry processes and Therapeutic Spiral Model safety structures as practical trauma-informed tools that can be adapted for any group. These action-based methods are presented with instructions for new and experienced facilitators to quickly incorporate into their work while adapting them for various populations, topics, and contexts. Processes covered include small groups, spectrograms, locograms, floor checks, step-in sociometry, sociograms, and circle of strengths. Each of these will be described and depicted with emphasis on employing them in trauma-informed and trauma-focused ways. The six trauma-informed principles outlined by SAMHSA will be highlighted as inherently embodied in experiential sociometry processes. These experiential group tools can be integrated into any group setting including group therapy, community organizing, education, supervision, training, and organizational leadership.
