ABSTRACT

Trauma leaves us with a sense of disconnection while threatening our sense of worthiness or innocence. In the moment of trauma, mutuality disintegrates, and the possibility of collaboration is lost. The victim-perpetrator reciprocity creates an unbalanced power dynamic often reenacted in posttraumatic stress. The resulting sense of unworthiness and self-hatred complicates one’s search for belonging, self-love, and purpose. Group work and psychodrama offer avenues for participants to experience and engage in collaboration and mutuality while recovering self-worth and a feeling of belonging. Collaboration and belongingness are equally important in organizations as they help staff feel valued, a part of, and purpose driven. Trauma-informed leaders treat staff with dignity and respect while engaging in collaborative ways.
