ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 is the introduction to the book. It introduces the profound scale of the challenge that addressing climate change poses for the agri-food system and highlights how food is such an integral part of not only everyday life, but also our social and economic systems. It briefly explains the climate change problem and the strengthening commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It then introduces main problems that agriculture and the food system pose for emissions and discusses the principal features of change in the food system over the past century, before setting out the structure of the rest of the book.
