ABSTRACT

Planning and leading a community-engaged performance tour requires a working understanding of service-learning, community engagement, and engaged scholarship. Chapter 1 defines those terms and contextualizes them within the development of higher education in Europe and its embodiment in U.S. universities and colleges during the 19th century. The related topics covered include the Morrill Land Grant Acts, 1960s social justice programs, and Ernest Boyer’s seminal writings on the scholarship of engagement.
