ABSTRACT

THE prediction of Mr Brewster that night at the Cherry Tree had indeed come to pass and for some weeks already David had been employed as a secretary and interpreter by the Chinese Legation. The post was so suitable for his talents and the work so agreeable that he often blessed the day in San Francisco when he had the good fortune to encounter Mr Ting. His present visit to Red Hall, however, was in a totally different capacity and much as he welcomed the chance of seeing for himself so remarkable a curiosity he was not at all easy in his mind about the purpose which had taken him there.
